Because no matter what, you always have power through your voice.

The Rex Project was created in response to my own experience with abuse from a former coach. I ended up as my own last line of defense as the surrounding staff both ignored and enabled my coach's actions. At the time though, I was uneducated about the red flags for abuse in sport and unable to recognize my coach's behavior for what it was, leaving it to continue on for 6+ years.

This is the gap The Rex Project is working to fill. To prevent abuse in sports by making the information about how to identify and respond to abusive behavior readily available to all athletes and their supporters.

Why the Rex Project?

Who’s Rex?

T-Rexasaurous (his full name) is the pup I got after graduating college in May, 2020. Rex soon became another method for my coach to make me lose trust in my abilities as he’d tell me how poorly I was training him and how I needed to use “my man voice” with him.

Despite this, Rex is the only reason I am here today.

He was the one “thing” that my brain couldn’t reason would be relieved or wouldn’t notice if I was no longer here.

Rex kept me alive through my darkest times and I couldn’t be more grateful to have him in my life. It only felt right to name the project after him.

About Me

My name is Emma Tarbath. I grew up in Anchorage, AK and made my way to the Pacific North West after graduating from college in May, 2020. The opportunity to participate in sport means a ton to me because of the confidence they gave little Emma. Sports never caused me any harm, but the people and the systems in them did. Sports have the ability to be a bright light in so many peoples’ lives and I hope I can be a part of creating that reality.
