I believe sharing athletes’ experiences with abuse is a necessary step in preventing abusive athletic relationships as we can’t learn from what we don’t know.
Athlete Impact Statements
During my time skiing, I was a hardcore believer in the idea that to be the best, I had to be different than everyone else. This made me more willing to accept abusive treatment from my coach even when my teammates pushed back against it. Through sharing athletes’ experiences, I want to illustrate the nuance that exists in abusive relationships, show that any gender of any sport can be abused, and that preventing abusive athletic relationships is truly a matter of life and death.
A note about all experiences shared through The Rex Project:
The purpose of sharing athletes’ experiences with abuse is not to seek any sort of “revenge” on previously abusive coaches. Because of this, our short films we will not mention any names and will be limited to only the necessary information that provides context to the athlete’s experience (i.e. where the athlete was at the time, time frame of the abuse, etc.).
For our written impact statements, we will not be including the names of the abusive athletic staff, unless it has already been reported by a news agency or other media. We will also be leaving out the names of the club(s), institutions, or other athletic organizations at which the abuse occurred.
Please feel free to reach out with any questions or feedback around this policy!
